Like the years we have had a thread for press conferences on team progress late in the season. I think since the season is coming to a close and teams are scrabbling for position we should have a thread to vent our team's position on how we are doing and what we need to do better. I'm not to sure if we already have a thread for the press conferences yet but I thought if we didn't then now's as good a time as any. Talking smack helps too.
For example the last two year's i've talked some game and have lost both 1st round series respectively, 4-0 to the devils, and 4-1 to the caps. So most likely I personally may refrain from talking too much sh** this year and focus on my tema only.
GOOD LUCK! and of course,
GO HABS GO!!!

Flyers Reward Daniels With Extension
MARCH 23, 2006
PHILADELPHIA — The Philadelphia Flyers announced that they have extended head coach Jeff Daniels' contract through the 2007-08 season. Daniels took over the team Feb. 2 after General Manager Cory Lavalette stepped aside as coach.
"We're thrilled with what Jeff has done since taking the reins of the team, and we felt now was as good a time as any to reward him for his efforts," Lavalette said. "His dedication and hard work has earned us a playoff berth and currently has us atop the Eastern Conference standings. With the playoffs looming, we wanted to show our appreciation and dedication to him."
Lavalette said Daniels' recent subtle changes of the forward lines has sparked the team to a strong stretch run (7-2-1 in the past 10 games). Viktor Kozlov has been teamed with Kris Draper and P.J. Axelsson for a third line that's providing shutdown defense and scoring, while for the first time this year Marco Sturm is playing on the right wing with the top line combination of Patrick Marleau and Shane Doan.
"I'm very thankful to the Flyers organization for giving me this chance, and it's gratifying to know that they think I'm doing a good job," Daniels said. "Our main focus now is securing the top seed in the conference and preparing for a long playoff grind. I think our guys are up for it."

FORWARD MIKE JOHNSON INJURIED IN GAME 3, SVOBODA IS CALLED UP
May 6, 2006
MONTREAL- During game 3 of the second round match-up with the Capitals, forward Mike Johnson was injuried. The extent of the injury will sideline him for the rest of the post season. "We're going to miss his presence on the ice and in the locker room" captain Daniel Alfredsson stated. "He may not put up the big numbers like he did in the past, however he's a big part of this team. We're a group of guys with one goal, and that's to win the cup, losing MJ will hurt us, but we'll use it to fuel the fire." The Habs have been unbeaten thus far in the post season and are riding on the back of Goaltender Robert Esche since the trade.
Since the trade the Habs have risen to win the Northeast Divison and have won 7 straight post-season games. "The change since Escher has joined the team has been huge," stated Mike Johnson after the trade deadline, "We've known that we have a great team, but something has been missing and it seem that he's the piece." Johnson was injuried in game 3 and on again off again forward Jaroslov Svoboda has been called up to join the team for game 4. Svoboda has spent more time as a scratch or playing in the minors this season. "I look forward to adding another dynamic to the team, I know my role and just want to be productive" Svoboda commented. "Lossing MJ in the locker-room will be tough because he's always so positive and upbeat. MJ is one of those guys that's so unselfish and wants the best for you, he called me and wished me luck while at the hospital."
Assitant Captain Mats Sundin added some bulletin board material for the Caps when he called out the Capital's team when he said after game 3, "They seem to have the belief they are better than us, and are trying to run our player's every chance they get. This isn't the same team as last year when they beat us in the first round 4 games to 1. We're bigger, stronger, and just plain better than them. If you have any question just look at the scoreboard, IT'S 3-0!"
The Canadiens also lost defenseman Alexi Zhitnik during game 3 in Washington, but he's expected to be a game time decision by Coach Maurice. "We're not going to rush Alexi back, if he's not ready to go, then we can sit him because we have some young guys ready to go. Tallinder had played most of the season, so we aren't too concerned. We just want to keep our guys healthy."
The Canadiens and Capitals will play game 4 in Washington, D.C. on Tuesday, May 9, 2006 at 7p.m. The Habs can close out the series on Tuesday and rest their injuries or come back home for game 5 on Thursday night.

Hawks fire Waters, Gilmour and Shakur
The Blackhawks announced sunday that head coach Roger Waters and his assistants Afeni Shakur and David Gilmour won't be back next year. All three have been with the organization since game one. When asked why these decisions where made owner/general manager Carl Welbourn had this to say. "Because we don't mess around here in Chicago. Our first round loss was extremely embarrassing. Give the Blue Jackets credit, they played hard as hell. But our team was only clicking at 70% and that lays squarely on the coaches shoulders"
All three coaches were reached for comment and had this to say. (Afeni Shakur) "Things just didn't work out this year. Don't look at me. I just opened and closed the doors for the defenseman. Roger and David wanted complete creative control. At one point Roger wanted to take away the little job that he gave me. Said i couldn't get those doors open fast enough for Big Z. I'm extremely disappointed to be let go but i'll bounce back"
(David Gilmour) "That Roger Waters is such a dillhole. He got us all fired. He wanted to do things one way and i wanted to do things the right way. He never wanted to switch up the lines when the offence wasn't going. He overworked Eddie to the point of exhaustion and his game plan against Columbus was BOLLOCKS! We didn't last very long together compared to the 20 years in the music business. I'm suprised we lasted three in the hockey world"
(Roger Waters) "Our time with the Hawks was a lot like our time in Floyd. We won the Cup our first year. That was like putting out Dark Side Of The Moon, you just can't top it. Then things slowly took a turn for the worse. David stopped listening to me. He went all sixes and sevens on me i tell ya. If he would have just done everything i told him to do we would have won the Cup three years in a row and still be employed. Now he got me fired and it's 100% Gilmour's fault. He broke up the band AND lost us the series against the Jackets"
(General Manager Carl Welbourn announces the new coaching staff)
"We're proud to introduce the new head coach of the Chicago Blackhawks Axl Rose and his assistants Slash and Robert Duvall" Asked if this looks like a repeat of two ex bandmates running the show Mr. Welbourn had this to say. "No. We're very happy to have Axl, Slash and Bobby running the show. I'll supply them with the players and they'll guide them"
Slash had this to say. "My music hasn't been the same since GnR broke up. Me and Axl worked very well together in the early years and made some classic albums"
(reporter interrupts Slash) Carl, are you sure this won't be a repeat of the first coaching trio, this looks awfully familiar? (Mr. Welbourn kicks the reporter out of the room)
"I told you we don't mess around in Chicago" Carl tells the remaining reporters.
Axl choosing his words carefully screached these few words. " Oh ya i'm out of rehab. I've been sober for 10 days now. Slash has been sober for a year or so and he's helping me out with my demons. I'm still a very heavy smoker but i think i can stop for 40 minutes while i'm behind the bench. I'll just make up for it in between periods and smoke a pack hahaha"
(A reporter gets in a question after the laughter)
Carl, why did it take so long to make a coaching change? The team's season has been over for a good couple weeks. "Well we just wrapped up our player reviews yesterday. The players always come first. The coaches were second on the list and we axed them all in under a day. So i think we made pretty good time. We have six weeks before the draft and that gives the fresh faces plenty of time to have good dialogue with our scouting staff"
(Robert Duvall let's everyone know that around the rink he wants to be known as Tom Hagen)
"Just call me Tom, Mr. Duvall says"
(Carl closes out the press conference)
"This year was a disappointment with our early round exit but we'll be back stronger than ever next year. A new direction was needed and this will recharge all of our batteries. We can't wait for the draft and after some fishing, training camp will be right around the corner"

Pittsburgh(AP)
Pittsburgh named Pavel Bure it's new coach and general manager today in a press conference from Mellon Arena. Bure retired with the club as a player last year and knew he always wanted to stay with the club at a higher level.
"I am just thrilled by this, very excited to put my stamp on the organization, I promise in Pittsburgh that the rebuilding process will not be boring, we will play entertaining hockey the way it is meant to be played. As a GM I will be looking for young, exciting players to help our team rebuild.
After two dissapointing seasons, rebuild mode is fully fledged in the Steeltown and Owner Daniel Lyder felt that GM Mike Futa and coach Mike Stothers were perphaps not the right men for the job, both will stay with the organization as the head scout and affiliate coach, respectively.
Joining Bure on the coaching staff will be former teammates at CSKA Moscow Valeri Kamensky and Vladimir Konstantinov, whose playing career was cut short in a tragic car accident. The latter will also serve as assistant GM.
"I am very glad to have these friends join me, as they are very knowledable in the game of hockey. With us in charge I predict a great future for this franchise."

Kerr Signs On As Assistant With Flyers
PHILADELPHIA — Ex-Flyer Tim Kerr has accepted an offer to be an assistant coach for Jeff Daniels and the Philadelphia Flyers. It marks the first coaching assignment for the former NHL star.
"Tim was one of the best power play guys in NHL history," GM Cory Lavalette said. "Our guys can learn a lot from him on how to be more successful on special teams."
Kerr was undrafted yet went on to score 50-plus goals in four straight seasons for the Flyers in the mid-1980s, including an NHL-record 34 power play goals during the 1985-86 season. Fittingly, he will be relied upon to run the team's power play.
Kerr scored 370 goals in 13 injury-riddled NHL seasons that included recurring shoulder problems and a bout with viral meningitis in 1985 — the same season he broke the power play goal record. He won the Masterson Trophy in 1989 and was a three-time NHL All-Star. He played 11 seasons with the Flyers before spending his last two years with the Rangers and then Whalers, playing just 32 (and eight in the playoffs) and 22 games, respectively, in those seasons before retiring.
He joins Dave Tippett as Jeff Daniels' other bench assistant. Tippett was hired late in the season following his dismissal as head coach of the Minnesota Wild. Tippett's focus will shift to working solely with the penalty-killing units and team defense.

Red Wings Move Veteran Selanne, Bring In Youngster Daley
(DETROIT, AP) - In a move Red Wings GM Torrey Smith described as "the start of a minor rebuilding stage", the Detroit Red Wings traded Teemu Selanne and the 54th overall pick in this year's draft to the Calgary Flames in exchange for Trevor Daley, the 85th overall pick in 2006, and a 1st Round selection in 2007.
"It was a tough move to make since it hurts our chances of making a Cup run this season, but it was necessary considering the personnel we currently have in our organization," said Smith. "Although Teemu's time in Detroit was short-lived, there's not one bad thing we can say about him and we wish him all the best in Calgary."
The Red Wings acquired Selanne as part of a four-team trade midway through last season that also brought in Olli Jokinen, Jean-Sebastian Giguere, and Radek Martinek. Selanne spent time on Detroit's second line, and finished the season with 23 goals and 57 points. However, the Red Wings vastly underachieved all season and narrowly missed the eighth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference. Smith said he felt team fatigue was a factor all season long and stressed the importance of bringing in young and emerging players.
In Daley, the Red Wings bolster a young group of blueliners lacking in star potential. "We have some solid young defenseman, but we're still lacking a cornerstone guy. Lubo [Visnovsky] is our obvious #1 and we expect a lot out of him, but after that, there's somewhat of a dropoff," Smith told reporters. "We hope that in a few years, Daley will step in and be a Brian Rafalski-type player. He has all the tools to do it, now it's just a matter of putting the pieces together."
Skating is Daley's best asset, as well as his ability to combine a mixture of solid defensive play and smart offensive instincts. A previous knock on him was his lack of size, although that doesn't appear to be as big of a concern with the new rules in place. "I've seen him play and he skates magnificently," commented Red Wings head coach Tom Renney. "He definitely makes up for his lack of size through his skating, since he can get himself in good position based on his wheels alone. We're excited to have him on the team and I look forward to coaching him."
It isn't certain where Daley will be playing this upcoming season, but is clear that he'll be in the compeition for a job on the Red Wings squad once training camp starts.
