We got a pretty good conversation going about defensive prospects, so I thought I'd start a goalie one.
I have Mike Smith (preseason waiver claim), who could win my backup job next season, depending on Grahame's rerate. I also picked up Curtis McElhinney on waivers, but it's tough being in the Flames system with Kipper in front of you ... he's got a shot at being their backup next year, but they'd prolly rather have him starting in Omaha and playing a lot.
Ben Bishop is the only one I've drafted. I had my eye on him leading up to the draft, with the hope I could get him late in the third round. But when he went in the third round to St. Louis in the NHL Draft, I ended up taking him at No. 71 to make sure I got him. He pretty much led Maine to the Frozen Four this weekend (his second time in his two years at Maine) and The Hockey News had him ahead of Swartz as far as goaltending prospects in the Blues system.

Im not too bad here either.
Leland Irving Tyler Plante Kelly Guard
Those are my three horses here. I dunno why Panthers fans think Plante is in the running for the future starting job with Schantz... maybe cause they have no good goalies? Plante is likely never going to make it in my opinion but who knows, hes had a better year this year than last year, but still needs alot of work. Maybe hes a late bloomer.
As for Irving, Ive seen him lots in Flames camps and what not, hes a big league goalie. He challenges shooters A TON. That tells me he has alot of confidence in himself. He should be in the show by the time hes 21. After 1 year of AHL seasoning I anticipate him being in the show. So thatd be there 09-10 season.
Kelly Guard, who really knows about this guy. I guess hes taking the long road to the NHL. He might be a serviceable player if he ever has the right situation in front of him. Basically I dont see him making it for very long, but he could be a guy whos in the NHL for 2 years or so as a starter before he is realized to only be a backup. Similar to Thibault or something like that maybe. He could very well never make it though.

I clearly don't like wasting a roster spot on goalie prospects... Pekka Rinne - Should've made the NHL this year after his last couple seasons in the AHL but even if he didn't get beat up by a group of guys in Finland which resulted in shoulder surgery he wouldn't have beaten out Mason. Not sure what the Preds plan on doing with him since he's clearly better than Finley and at the least can be a good backup. If they plan on keeping Mason around they better do Rinne a favor and trade him.

I kinda agree with Blues Philosophy, I dont think Ill be drafting a goalie for a looooong time now. Lundqvist is showing signs of being a guy who could be an elite goalie in the league for more than just a couple years and Irving is a top prospect who should arrive completely right near Lundy's theoretical peak. Not to mention goalies are a bit of a crap shoot and dont really evolve for several years after the draft.

I've never drafted a goalie.
I don't have the 8 years of patience it takes for them.

I got Emery, who was more of a prospect up until this season but is doin very well this year in Ottawa.
Also got Corey Crawford, who is having a solid season in the AHL. I was planning on drafting Verlemov with my 2nd rounder last year, but got the offer of Crawford and a later 2nd or 3rd (can't remember) so I took that instead figuring that Crawford would be in the big leagues quicker than Verlemov (I needed more of a sure thing at that time). We'll see how it turns out.

I made a similar move to you Thrashers. Though I dealt Kaspar and my first for Irving and I believe a later pick as well. I just wanted an insurance policy on goaltending since Lundqvist is only a 2nd year goalie, and is still far from a goalie who can play for a few years... though thats becoming more clear lately.
I figured Kaspar is gonna bust in my opinion, so it was like a 1st for irving and a later pick which I felt was fair. If Kaspar ever gets his game together then that sucks for me but whatever. Nice to know Ive got a promising young goalie coming down the pipe, JUST IN CASE basically.

I don't have many goalie prospects but Jeff Deslaurier, who could be the Oilers #1 in about 3/4 years time.

I have Marek Schwarz who's showing good progression. Also have Peter Budaj who will eventually be a #1 in the NHL, IMO.

I've got Cory Schneider but he's stuck in VAN so not sure what will happen with him. He's been awesome in college, probably will make the jump to the pros but he's going nowhere if he is in VAN.
Also have Nolan Shaeffer but he's nothing more than an average backup at best.
Might need to draft or trade for a goalie with Weekes going down the tube and Fernandez being outplayed by Backstrom.

Agreed with Wally ... I'll prolly draft a goalie every three or four years ... otherwise, you can always get lucky on waivers with one.

I think waivers is the way to go with everything
I picked up Jaroslav Halak early in the year, and he has been outstanding for the Habs so far. May be my backup next year if he can play well the rest of the games
John Curry is another waiver pickup, he will be signing an NHL contract any day now, and he has a decent shot at the Hobey, despite not playing his best at the end of the year.
Jordan Parise is my last goalie, but he will prlly not amount to much and will most likely be heading back to the waiver pool soon.

Pekka Rinne - Vokoun trade means Rinne is the shoe-in backup for Mason who hopefully *crosses fingers* struggles with a starting job...lol Alvaro Montoya - High draft pick ended up getting him for some guys who just didn't have jobs on my team anymore so I was pretty happy to get him. Getting older but stuck behind Lundqvist. Possible backup for the Rags this season. Levasseur - Really just an insurance goaltender worthy of a roster spot. Bryzgalov is most likely gone but he'll probably be in the AHL this season.

Yeah ... if they trade Bryzgalov, I think they'll give Hiller the backup job, let Levasseur work in the A.
