The 20-year-old played two seasons in college, scoring nine goals and 22 assists last season. The Stars picked Niskanen in the first round of the 2005 entry draft.

Isn't that why Carolina traded him...they thought he wouldn't sign for another year or two?

I don't think it was so much that, as they needed another d-man ASAP to make another run. They got that with Gleason, plus dumped Tverdovsky's contract. Even if he said he would sign when his season ended this year, that was no good for them.

Raymond Macias signed with Colorado. An interesting prospect who I am surprised was on waivers so far into the season. 4th rounder in 05 scored 47 points in 69 games in 04-05 and then regressed in 05-06 scoring 38 in 68 bouncing between foward and defense. This season he played the whole season at defense and scored 30 goals 70 points in 70 games for Kamloops in the WHL.

Cogliano Signs Professional Deal with Edmonton Oilers
EDMONTON, Alberta -- Sophomore center Andrew Cogliano (Woodbridge, Ontario) of the University of Michigan ice hockey team has agreed to a contract with the NHL's Edmonton Oilers (Tuesday, May 2). Cogliano was a first-round draft pick (25th overall) of the Oilers in the 2005 NHL Entry Draft.

Cogliano had a breakout sophomore season with a 24-26-50 line in 38 games to finish tied for first on the team in goals and third on the Maize and Blue in points. His 50 points were tied for eighth-best in the nation, and his 24 goals were tied for seventh-best in the country. From Nov. 4 through Feb. 18, he posted points in 22 out of 24 games (17-17-34), including a career-best 12-game point streak. Cogliano earned All-CCHA honorable mention.
He was named to the CCHA All-Rookie Team in 2005-06, when he had a 12-16-28 line in his freshman season.
Internationally, Cogliano won back-to-back gold medals with Team Canada at the 2006 and 2007 IIHF World Junior Championships. He had a goal and two assists in six games at the 2007 tournament and a goal and four assists in six games in 2006.
