Official RULES for the GMH
all times listed below are Eastern
Roster:
Each team in the league will have 40 members on their roster, including at least 1 rated goalie. Any player not on a roster whose draft year has passed can be picked up via waivers with one exception (see below). If a two for one trade is made, the team acquiring two players must drop one to waivers in order to keep their team under forty.
All players are rated according to the LCHV online SimonT sim league. This league provides a rating for all players who played in the NHL last year. All players who are not currently rated by the LCHV will be given a rating of 50 if needed for your team.
Red Shirt Players:
In addition to the team's 40 man roster, team's have the option to "red shirt" three newly drafted players each draft. A "red shirt" does NOT count towards the team's roster limit. These players will retain "red shirt" status for three years or until one of the following takes place:
The player is rated by our rating system.
The player is traded to another team in the GMH.
The player is dropped to waivers.
The player is added to the sim as an emergency injury call up with a rating of 50.
The player's three year red shirt eligibility expires.
As players lose red shirt status, a team's roster limit size will not increase. If a team's roster is at 40 and a player leaves red-shirt status (or any other event causes a team to be above 40), a GM will have three days to choose a player to drop from his team, or one player will be dropped *at random* from his list. The commissioner will give notice to any team above the 40-man limit and the three day timer will begin at that time.
Simulations:
Games will be simmed three times a week, on Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday. We will currently be using FHLsim for the simulations. Teams will play 86 games, four against division opponents, three against remaining conference opponents and two against non-conference opponents.
By 11pm EST on the day before the sim each team's GM needs to send in their preferred line combinations. Any team not sending in their preferred line combos will default to whatever combo they had previously. In the event a player is injured during the sim, the team will automatically default to best lines (there's no way to get an injury report out there game by game and expect to see changes in times for the next night's games).
Waiver rules:
Any team wishing to claim a player off of waivers must request to do so by the assigned time that the "waivers" account makes announcement. On that night the GM in charge of waivers (Washington) will check all the waiver claims. The team with the worst record (least points) from the previous season will have first rights to a waiver claim. On the following day, all teams will be notified of who was claimed and who was dropped. These changes will take effect for the next scheduled sim, and the new players who ended up on waivers can be claimed in the same matter the following waiver period. A player claimed off of waivers cannot be traded for 30 days, however that player may be dropped back to waivers at any time.
Any 19 or 20 year old undrafted by the NHL and the GMHL in that player's draft year cannot be claimed in offseason waivers (in other words he is back in the draft). If such a player is claimed during the season off of waivers prior to the trade deadline, that player is the property of the claiming team and is no longer draft eligible.
All waiver claims should be sent to the waivers account. You can search for this account under members section. List the player you want to pick up as well as the player you will be dropping if your claim is successful. If you are trying to pick up two separate players, you must list a different player as a drop on each claim.
Ineligible players:
Any player who has signed his retirement papers in real life becomes ineligible to play in our league. Any person who has not signed his retirement papers in real life is eligible to play in our league, regardless if that player is holding out, injured, or playing in an international league. If that player is unrated by the DVHL rankings, his rating will default to a 50. If a player retires prior to GMHL trade deadline, then that player will be released from GMHL team effective prior to the next sim in GMHL. If a player retires post GMHL trade deadline, then that player can remain on GMHL for duration of season as well as playoffs and will be dropped during off season.
Activity:
A league this size requires everyone to stay active. Trade requests are expected to be responded to within 3-4 days. If you don't care for the trade, a simple “no” will work, just let the person who initiated the trade know that you saw it. We have a message board, we'd like you to participate on it. You don't have to add to every conversation but if you could chime in once a week or so and let us know you're alive it would be appreciated. As well, under the sim rules, your line combos should be sent in once a week. Any GM who does not post on the board or send in a line combo in a 30 day period will be removed from the league. I don't want to remove anyone from the league, but we need a hard rule to stick by. Special circumstances may arise, if something weird happens let us know, we'll work with you.
If a goalie is reduced to condition (CD) 95, the goalie will be suspended for four games, and the most recent lines files submitted by that team will be erased. This is to ensure a fresh goalie will be in the lineup.
Sample weekly schedule:
Monday - two day sim, teams receive league files with trades and waivers
Tuesday- lines due
Wednesday - three day sim, teams receive league files
Friday - lines due
Saturday - three day sim, teams receive league files
Sunday - lines due
Playoffs:
Playoff format is best of seven series, mirroring the NHL.
At the time of the playoffs, the sim schedule will be broken down to allow for line changes after each game.
Entry draft:
The entry draft will take place over the summer while the NHL is not in session. All age requirements match the NHL's (ask if you are unsure about Euro or overager rules) The order will determined as the NHL's is, with final ranking and a lotto system being used to determine draft order. Teams will have a 24 hour time limit to make their selection. If team A chooses a player at 7:35pm, team B has until 7:35pm the next day to choose. If team B jumps the gun and makes their selection at 8:10pm the same day, then team C has until 8:10pm the next day. The entry draft will require teams to check the message board at least once a day, to see if it is their pick. This will also draw the process out over the summer and keep interest up in the league.
Salary Cap
Teams must remain under a hard salary cap. This cap is set with a high value so few teams will be at the cap number. This cap is in place to allow for elite teams to still become elite, but to also limit a team from hoarding all the talent in the league.
The salary cap figure is reached in the offseason by taking the average salary of all 30 teams (full player salary, not 10% of a two-way deal) as provided by the ratings package and adding 37% to that average. The number is then rounded.
Any team in the league who is over the cap number after the start of the season for more than three days will automatically have one player suspended to put the team under the cap. An example, if a team is 2.2 million over the cap, the player suspended will be the lowest paid player on the team who makes more than 2.2 million. Team's will be warned if they are over and will have three days to get under.
Salary Floor
The salary floor figure is reached in the offseason by taking the average salary of all 30 teams (full player salary, not 10% of a two-way deal) as provided by the ratings package and subtracting 37% to that average. The number is then rounded.
Any team in the league who is under the cap number after the start of the season will not be punished. However if your team is under the cap, you can not make a trade to decrease your team salary. For example, if salary floor is 30 million and Team A has a salary 28.5 million, Team A can not trade a player who makes more than what he is receiving.
All salary numbers are taken from nhlnumbers.com and the salary that is used for our sim is from the year prior to current year to match ratings since they are based on last season's performance.
